Stachybotrys chartarum (or Stachybotrys atra) is a type of mold often referred to as black mold1. The mold can be greenish-black in color and while it isn’t as common as other molds (Cladosporium, Penicillium, Aspergillus, and Alternaria) it can still be found in buildings and homes1. As with any other type of mold, growth happens in a warm, moist, and humid environment. Water damage, condensation, water leaks, humidity, and flooding all contribute mold growth1.
In addition to growing in places where normal mold growth can occur, black mold can grow on materials that have low nitrogen content and a high cellulose content including: paper, dust, gypsum board, lint, fiberboard1, wood, ceiling tiles, and drywall sheetrock2. It can be wet or dry, powdery or slimy3. Black mold spores can spread quickly if not removed3.
High levels of inhalation of any mold can cause health problems including: rashes, conjunctivitis, cold-like symptoms (allergic rhinitis), and can aggravate asthma2.
If mold growth is found, this usually indicates that there has been water damage or that there is a problem with moisture or water1. This problem should be addressed in addition to the mold removal to prevent mold growth from re-occurring. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, black mold can be removed in the same manner as other types of mold; no different precautions need to be taken1. However, it should be removed by a trained professional.
