Lead is most often found in buildings and homes that were built before 1978. This is primarily due to the fact that lead based paint was available and used up until 1978. Lead has been discovered in many different environments including residential homes, commercial and government buildings, schools, industrial district, bridges, and water towers. It is mainly found in paints and varnishes. In addition, some ceramic dishes and painted toys have recently been identified as having problems with lead exposure. Lead and lead dust often is exposed into an environment by the chipping or the pealing of paints or varnishes.
Lead and your health
Everyone is at risk for lead poisoning. Adults who work with lead on the job like painters and remodelers are highly susceptible. However, children under the age of six are most susceptible. Lead is primarily introduced into the body through the inhalation or swallowing of the polluted products or the microscopic dust of polluted products. The symptoms of lead poisoning can vary greatly from person to person. In fact, there are children and adults that appear healthy but can have dangerous levels of lead in their bodies. If there is a concern about lead poisoning you should consult your doctor. They will arrange a blood test to find out if you have elevated levels of lead.
